Over the past decade, the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) sector has become one of the top industries in the Philippines, and it’s showing no sign of decline. It has contributed to the growth of the country’s economy by bringing in billions of investments and creating endless job opportunities.
In case you weren’t sure, BPO is the process of contracting certain business tasks - payroll, HR or accounting, for example - to a third party service provider. It’s typically a cost-saving business strategy that doesn’t rely on being present in the same market.
For this reason, more foreign companies are entrusting their support departments to the hands of Pinoys. Thanks to our booming economy and general reputation for quality customer service, companies from all around the world focus their BPO efforts in the Philippines.
There’s a lot of opportunity in the growing sector - more than you think - so here’s how you can maintain a long, progressive and fulfilling career in the BPO space.
1. Train well: there’s lots to learn! Every BPO provides extensive training for new hires. Take this opportunity to learn new things and the chance to enhance your skills. Your attentiveness during training will determine how your career will pan out, and will also set the right expectations for your trainers and team leader. Everything you gain during this critical time will help you ease into the role once you begin.
2. Focus on the long term There’s a misconception that BPO roles are only for college grads and people who aren’t looking for a long career. In actual fact, working in a BPO company can lead to a long-term job path for many - all you have to do is work for it! Determine the track you want to take (operations, marketing, HR, etc) and talk to your boss to find out the best way to get there. BPO companies tend to be big organisations, so the change for career development is decent if you work hard to make a name for yourself in your team.
3. Go the extra mile So much in BPO is about service and relationships - with your clients as well as your colleagues. Anything you can do to go the extra mile for people will be noticed and open up avenues to promotions very fast. A lot of what you do might be on the phone, so ensure your voice and accent are clear. Behave professionally and always be polite. Take the time to learn your way around your company’s computer systems, and always ensure you’re learning on the job. Customers will appreciate your attentiveness as much as your boss will.
4. Learn to love your work One secret to staying happy is to love what you’re doing. We know - it’s easier said than done! Perhaps BPO isn’t your dream job, and that’s okay, but making it the right one for you is simply a matter of perspective. Focus on the positive aspects and turning yourself into an all-around employee. Think of how you’re helping many people with your service, and how lucky you are to have a stable job that pays well. You spend at least nine hours a day at the office, you don’t want to waste that time hating your job!
The BPO industry offers a lot to employees beyond a decent salary. Take the time to turn a BPO role into a long-term career, and you’ll be glad you did!
